More Tornados for Libyan campaign

The RAF is to send more Tornados in support of Operation Unified Protector.

July 18: The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced late last week that it is to deploy an additional four Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s to Gioia del Colle air base in Italy to further support operations over Libya.

The aircraft are in addition to 12 Tornados already deployed and the MoD says this latest deployment is intended to bolster NATO’s reconnaissance capability, the Tornado GR4s being equipped with RAPTOR (Reconnaissance Airborne Pod for Tornado) pods.

It is also believed that XV(R) Squadron, the Operational Conversion Unit based at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland is to lose its reserve status and become a fully operational front-line unit with an embedded training flight.
