Italian Navy deploys Merlin to Afghanistan

 

The Italian Navy has deployed its AgustaWestland AW101 ASH to Afghanistan.

November 15: The Italian Navy (Marina Militaire Italiano) has deployed its AgustaWestland AW101 ASH helicopters to Afghanistan for the first time.

Drawn from 1° Gruppo Elicotteri based at Spezia-Luni/Sarzana, the three helicopters are part of Air Task Group ‘Shark’ under the command of Capitano di Fregata Armando Simi based at the Italian Base Camp Arena in Herat to support ISAF forces. Missions assigned include aero-medical assistance, transport and surveillance.

As well as Navy personnel, ‘Shark’ includes the San Marco Regiment of Fusiliers to undertake Force Protection and a medical team consisting of a doctor and two paramedics.
